The School of Agricultural Sciences at Career Point University continues its legacy of practical, student-centric learning with the Experiential Learning Program (ELP). This program, embedded in the final semester of the B.Sc. (Hons) Agriculture curriculum, bridges academic knowledge with hands-on skills essential for agripreneurship and innovation.

One of the prominent modules in this year’s ELP is Commercial Horticulture, where students received intensive training and practical exposure under the mentorship of experienced faculty. They successfully developed three commercial products that embody sustainable, eco-friendly practices and entrepreneurial thinking.

Three Innovative Student Products

  1. Herbal Gulal from Flowers and Petals

Students prepared eco-friendly, herbal gulal using dried flower petals and natural plant extracts. Free from harmful chemicals and synthetic dyes, this product is safe for skin and environmentally sustainable. The process involved:

  • Collection and drying of locally available flower petals
  • Powder formulation using natural binders and color enhancers
  • Packaging and branding for seasonal market demand, especially during Holi

This initiative not only promotes safe celebrations but also revives the traditional practice of using flora-based colors.

  1. Moringa Powder – A Natural Health Supplement

Rich in nutrients, Moringa oleifera leaves were harvested and processed by students into high-quality moringa powder. The product is:

  • 100% natural, with no additives or preservatives
  • A potent source of iron, calcium, and antioxidants
  • Packaged for retail with an emphasis on health-conscious consumers

Students gained in-depth knowledge of post-harvest handling, drying techniques, and value addition, paving the way for agri-based wellness entrepreneurship.

  1. Plant Propagation through Various Techniques

Students applied a range of propagation methods, cutting, layering, grafting, and budding, to raise new plants from mother stock. They cultivated:

  • Pedilanthus Variegated
  • Plumeria alba
  • Euphorbia milii

This segment strengthened students’ understanding of nursery management, plant health, and commercial horticulture planning. The propagated plants were maintained in the university’s greenhouse facilities and showcased during academic exhibitions.

Why This Module Matters

The Commercial Horticulture module promotes:

  • Skill-based learning through real-world practices
  • Entrepreneurial exposure by converting ideas into viable products
  • Environmental consciousness with a focus on natural and sustainable techniques

These projects equip students with competencies in product development, quality control, and agri-marketing, vital traits for future agricultural professionals.
